An unseasonably late account of our winter vacation in an attempt to rekindle our blog

Miserably failing my New Year’s resolution to blog more, I’m only six months behind on our last life event worthy of web logging. However, on a different calendar a new year begins. Officially three years endured of residency, Stephanie and I are turning the page in our careers. Stephanie has finished her clinical training and is moving on to an administrative role as chief resident for the next year. I still have two more years of surgery training, but supposedly, thus begin the good years… Or so we have been told. So with beginning a new year in our careers on July 1, hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Stephanie and I had the pleasure of going skiing in Whistler back in January. I posted pictures at the time but never got around to blogging about it. Whistler is a ski village in British Columbia north of Vancouver and previous site of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Every time we go skiing I make a mental note of our top ski destinations and the favorites of the past. Whistler now tops the list. By its size alone it makes most other mountains seem like foothills.

To recount the fuzzy details of the trip six months later would belabor the point, so I will hit the highlights. The ski resort is actually two separate mountains. Blackcomb and Whistler. We stayed at the foot of the Blackcomb mountain in an excellent location with easy access to the slopes and easy access to a hot tub that awaited us at the end of each day. We were able to stroll down the streets of Whistler at night and view the previous Olympic Park.

I highly recommend Whistler as a future vacation spot for anyone. Don’t let the distance or foreign country intimidate you. It’s much easier to get to than you would think. Keep an eye out for another post coming soon, much more exciting than a half year’s old news.

Are your hands really that valuable?

About 7 weeks ago, I had a close encounter with concrete resulting in a broken scaphoid and two sprained wrists. Not the best career move when you’re trying to get in the operating room as often as you can. It all started back in July when, as a five year anniversary gift, my wife finally gave in to getting me a mountain bike (many I told you so’s to come).

Of course, after I had been riding for a couple of months, I started getting a little too confident. I often enjoy riding along the Mississippi river from Mud Island down to the Memphis-Arkansas bridge. Going approximately 20-25 mph downhill around a blind curve, there was a patch of unlevel concrete I hit while turning. The concrete grabbed my front tire, turning it completely perpendicular and catapulting me over the handlebars. Don’t worry the bike was okay and I was wearing a helmet. However, the brunt of the fall was absorbed on outstretched hands. I immediately knew I had done more damage than just a sprain. It was a painful 2 mile return the house at a snails pace.

Fast-forward 7 weeks, four of which were spent in a thumb spica cast, and things are 90% back to normal and I’m back in the O.R. doing what I love. The ironic part is that approximately 6 hours prior to the accident, one of the attending surgeons gave a grand rounds on finances and talked about the importance of disability insurance. I still haven’t gotten back on the saddle yet, but probably will soon. The ‘ol Cannondale is hanging in the garage waiting to get back on the trails.

The first post in series of photography tips on some of my favorite topics in photography.

I frequently get questions on different photography topics, from what kind of camera to buy to technique to what software to use. I have recently gotten into macrophotography, meaning photography of small objects close up, and I thought this would be a good photography topic to discuss. I plan on doing a little series on photography in no dedicated timeline, based on the whims of inspiration. Expect a few more topics down the line. Here’s a couple of samples from recent macro shots.

There’s a number of ways to do this. You can buy an expensive dedicated macro lens like this one. The difference in this lens is the focal length, or the distance in which the light converges on to you cameras sensor. Or you can do what I do and use you existing zoom lens with a Macro filter set. These have different rings of varying power to turn you lens into a macro lens very economically. For instance my canon lens can normally only focus on an object as close as 5 feet, however, when you slap one of these on there you’ll be able to focus on an object only a couple of feet away with a large amount of zoom. Note that both of these methods will shorten the depth of field and make focusing more critical. It also creates a nice blur effect on objects in foreground or background. You’ll likely want to switch to manual focus for this.

Stephanie and spent a week getting away to San Francisco

Stephanie and I headed to the city by the bay for our tri-annual vacation and escape from work. Due to the generosity of some family members we were able to stay at the historical Westin St Francis hotel, which is a pre-quake hotel built in 1904 with significant historical significance. It was a lovely hotel with a beautiful lobby located in the heart of San Francisco on Union Square

We started the week with classic tourist sites. We visited Baker beach with great sunset views of Golden Gate Bridge skirting the incoming tide for a quick photo-op. We roamed about Chinatown for a few good deals and souvenirs ending with the fortune cookie factory to see how fortune cookies were made. Of note, fortune cookies are much, much better warm off the press.

We then spent a peaceful morning roaming the Sequoias of Muir Woods amidst the early morning glow of fog and afternoon of fine seafood at Scoma’s in Sausalito before returning across the bay by ferry.

For our educational portion of the trip we toured Alcatraz Island and the famed Alcatraz prison which was probably my favorite part of the trip. It was interesting to see how the prison escape was actually executed and see the actual cells they escaped from. We also enjoyed to Cable Car Museum where you can still see the engines that drive the four remaining cable lines. And if you ever go to San Francisco, riding one of the cable cars is a must.

We ended our trip on a more relaxing note, enjoying some much need sleep and relaxing day of strolling and shopping. Of course, everything we ate in San Francisco was delicious, but notably Fish & Farm in the Mark Twain hotel probably took the prize of our best meal there.

Thanks to a call schedule flip-flop and some spontaneous decision making, Stephanie and I made a whirlwind trip to Gorman this weekend to see family, grill burgers with lots of family and as always have an excuse to eat Mexican and Barbecue (beef, of course). Not much to blog about other than 19 hours of quality time with my lovely wife, visiting with family and the requisite photo shoot of the nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kings of Leon and Band of Horses had a show in Memphis this past Saturday. The stars aligned and we both had the night off! Our friend, Carlenda joined us for the event. Mark had to save her from the fanatic elbowing his way to the front. Despite the crazy guy, It exceeded our expectations. Mark went out on a limb and said perhaps the top show he’s ever been to. It was great but I maintain that spot for the 5 hour drive for death cab for cutie. Anyway, the show ended with a bang … Literally … Fireworks. Music is one of the many reasons we moved to a big city and this experience reminded us of that.

Updated 4/22: I have been trying my hand at having a green thumb recently.

I have been trying my hand at having a green thumb recently. I don’t have a great track record of keeping things alive and in the past have had more of a enjoy it until it dies, then buy a new one strategy. The Memphis humidity or the fad of a new hobby must be working though, because we have recently had a lull in the foliage killings. Thus a project was spawned last weekend whose outcome is still unsure.
Last weekend, after months of anticipation, we completed a raised bed in our backyard. I’ve always enjoyed carpentry and this was a nice way to use that outdoors. So far, so good. Hopefully we will be eating fresh peppers by June. I feel the integrated soaker hose for easy watering may be the key to success.

If you don’t feel like making your own, there are easier pre-made options that our as easy as putting together Legos. You can pick them up online or at a local Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Along the lines of a recent green, thumb I have been experimenting with cement recently. It has all been part of a larger goal ever since I found this Book while perusing Barnes & Noble one rare lazy weekend. It inspired me to use cement to make countertops for bathrooms or outdoors, but I restrained myself to work stepwise in the medium of cement. So my first projects have been cement pots and containers. While the first several have cracked and led to nothing but a heavy garbage can come Monday, a few have worked out and have been functional. There are several online tutorials out there and the whole process isn’t really as hard as it would seem.

By the way, how cool is it that I did this post from my iPhone. Thanks WordPress.

Our trip continued on with a pitstop with old friends in Temple and on to Gorman. There we had the pleasure of meeting another new niece for the first time. As a family we’ve found a pattern that works for us. Family gatherings consist of going to my grandpa’s and cooking some form of beef while watching the kids play in the yard. Overall we had a great we enjoying family, friends and great Texas food.

The Texas tour continued last month with stops in Wild Wood, Beaumont and Liberty, TX visiting Stephanie’s family. We had a great time catching up. The whole family treated us to a great Texas style lunch as well as a feast of surf and turf prepared by Stephanie’s Dad. One of the highlights of the trip was getting to meet my new niece for the first time. Although Stephanie had already had the pleasure, it was my first time.

Stephanie and I begin our tour of Texas

In keeping with precedence, most blogging corresponds with vacation time. Stephanie and I had the week off and began our tour of Texas; meaning we spent vacation visiting both of our families, which live in different parts of Texas. It had been a long time since we had been to Texas and much of our family hadn’t seen us in over a year. First on the journey was Stephanie’s grandparents who live on Sam Rayburn Lake. We always enjoy the peacefulness of the lake and as always the great company. It’s a great place to sit on the porch and enjoy great company and a great view. More of Texas still to come.
